How to Perform the Salt Spray Test?

Corrosion is the biggest enemy of the metal components. This is a natural phenomenon and supposes to happen if there is no protective coating on the component. There are certain products which get corroded even after having a protective layer. The reason behind this is the poor or low-quality coating. This coating is not good enough to completely protect the product. In certain scenarios, testing against corrosion is needed to be performed.

Salt spray testing is one popular test which is performed to assess the surface coating of the product. In this test, the specimen is exposed to the saline fog at the temperature of approx. 37°C. This is an accelerated test and helps in assessing the behaviour of the product in some hours. The test is usually performed for 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours or so on… or depending upon the internal standards.

However, this test should not be directly related to real life as this test is an absolutely wet test, whereas real conditions are a periodic cycle of the dry and wet environment.

How to perform a salt spray test?
To perform the test, the sample is placed at an angle of 20° inside the chamber. The temperature inside the chamber will remain around 37°C and fog with 5% of NaCl solution is atomised to spread inside the chamber. The test duration is predefined. The machine is equipped with reservoirs for water and saline solution for non-stop operation. The approximate capacity of the reservoir is 60 litres.

Precautions to be taken while performing the test
- Do not open the canopy of the chamber before the completion of the test. That would disturb the simulated environment and may result in inaccurate test observations
- Use purging before opening the canopy. Once the test is completed, activate the auto-purging feature that settles down the saline fog into mist and does not let it dissipate in the surroundings.
- According to the test standards, the volume of the fog should be around 5ml. Therefore, keep a tab on the fog collection beaker to make sure right amount of fog is created inside the chamber.
- Do not keep the specimen too close to the chamber walls. If the specimen is in close proximity to the wall, it is exposed to excessive heating as heaters are incorporated in the walls.
